1. Facebook
2. Instagram
3. Email List
1. Facebook
– Upload natively to FB.
This means don't just share the YouTube link on Facebook. Facebook wants to keep people on the platform. So if your video is native to Facebook it will keep people there. If you use the link it will take people from Facebook to YouTube.
The best way I've ever heard this described: Imagine you're having a party and then someone shows up only to invite people to a party down the street. You want as little people to talk to that person as possible to keep people at your party!
In the beginning, I was like, whatever, I want the most amount of views on YouTube I don't care about Facebook. I figured since YouTube let me monetize I wanted to get people over there. But let me tell you until you're getting millions of views on YouTube (and actually making money) you just want exposure and brand awareness.
AKA you want Facebook views.
Get in some YouTube Facebook groups Here are a few pages that will let you share your video. Engage with people on this page, asking people for advice and sharing videos you are posting. People will subscribe and engage which is great when you're first starting out.
** When I first started I commented asking people to send me their channel links (people love to do this) then I watched their videos and decided what I LOVE and what I didn't LOVE about their channel. I used this information to create my own content.
2. Instagram
Make a story and include “LINK IN BIO” or “Swipe up”
Don't link directly to your video: The link you want to use is your “Uploads” playlist link.
When viewers click on the link they will see all of your recent videos but your newest will be first. Mine looks like this:
** How to create an “Upload” Playlist go to Playlist Chapter
Teaser video
You can create a 15 second to 1 min sneak peek of the video to post on your IG or in your stories.
3. Email list
Do this ASAP
Don't have an email list yet? I believe you. I'm three years and am now putting more attention into it! But I'd recommend starting one ASAP
GIVE something in exchange for the email
Do not make the mistake of simply saying “Want to be on the email list? Sign up here! ” “Want to stay in the loop? Sign up here”
Sorry, but no one wants to be on an email list unless it benefits them! When you tell people to sign up let them know WHY they should sign up!
“Do you ever miss videos? Get on the email list and get a monthly round up of the videos!” “Interested in heading to Nepal, get on the email list! I'm sending out details tomorrow” Etc.
Instagram shows about 5% of your audience your post.
100% of the people you send an email out to will get it, if they open it… that's another story. But just seeing your name in their inbox (even if they don't open it) will continue to remind them you exist!
Chapter 12: Homework
1. Get into some Facebook YouTube pages and ask people for their video links and watch a few to decide what you LOVE and what I didn't LOVE about their channel, then apply this to your own
2. Create an email list.
I use MailChimp but for no reason other than that's what I started with a few years ago. Do some research and find which works best for you or don't, and just GET STARTED!!
